What GSM Actually Means in Linen Bedding — and Why It Matters

Thread count gets all the attention. GSM gets almost none. That is a problem, because for linen bedding specifically, GSM is one of the most honest and useful specifications a brand can publish — and one of the easiest to obscure by simply not mentioning it.

Here is what it means, why it matters, and where The Foxes Den linen sits on the scale.

What Is GSM?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is a direct measure of fabric weight — how much a one-square-metre piece of the fabric weighs in grams. Unlike thread count, which can be manipulated by counting plies, GSM is a straightforward physical measurement. You cannot inflate it. You cannot redefine it. It is what it is.

In linen bedding, GSM is a reliable proxy for fabric density, durability, and hand feel. A lower GSM produces a lighter, more relaxed drape. A higher GSM produces a denser, more structured cloth. Neither is inherently better — but knowing where a fabric sits on the scale tells you a great deal about how it will feel and perform.

The GSM Spectrum in Linen Bedding

To give you a frame of reference, here is how linen fabric weight is typically distributed across the market:

• Under 140 GSM — ultra-light fashion linen. Sheer, delicate, and often used in apparel or decorative applications. Not well suited to bedding that needs to withstand regular washing and use.
• 140–160 GSM — light linen. Airy and relaxed, with a soft drape. Popular in warm climates and summer bedding ranges. Can feel insubstantial to those accustomed to heavier cloth.
• 160–170 GSM — light to mid-weight linen. The entry point for quality residential bedding. Relaxed in feel, with enough body to hold its structure through washing. This is where our lighter linen pieces sit.
• 185–190 GSM — solid mid-weight luxury linen. The sweet spot for year-round residential use. Dense enough to feel substantial, light enough to breathe well. This is the weight used across our core linen bedding collection.
• 211 GSM — heavy linen. Noticeably denser and more structured. Used in our duvet cover range, where the additional weight provides the body and drape that a duvet cover requires to sit and hang correctly.
• 250–300 GSM and above — industrial and upholstery linen. Not used often in Sheets or Duvets, we use in some of our bedcovers, its heavy, and designed for applications that require structural rigidity rather than comfort.

At 211 GSM, our duvet covers are weighted to complement the fill inside them — providing enough body to drape cleanly over a duvet insert without bunching or shifting.

Why Brands Don't Always Publish GSM

The honest answer is that a low GSM number is harder to market than a high thread count number. A 140 GSM linen sheet sounds less impressive than a "600 thread count" cotton sheet, even if the linen is the better product for the application.

Publishing GSM requires a brand to commit to a specific, verifiable claim about their fabric. It invites comparison. It makes it harder to substitute a lighter, cheaper fabric without the customer noticing.
